BTEC National Diploma in Aerospace Engineering (Avionic)

This course is ideal if you’d like a career in avionic aircraft maintenance.

You will study avionics, flight systems and the electrical systems of aircraft. Your diploma will bring career opportunities in airlines, aircraft maintenance organisations and the armed forces. You can also progress to a higher education course such as the Foundation Degree in Aircraft Engineering which can lead to a EASA Pt 66 licence and professional engineer status.

PLEASE NOTE THAT AT PRESENT THE EASA Pt 66 B2 (AVIONICS) COURSE IS NOT OFFERED AT NEWCASTLE AVIATION ACADEMY.  STUDENTS WISHING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN AVIONICS SHOULD CONTACT CITY OF BRISTOL COLLEGE.

The course is offered over two years full-time, or three years part-time.

• Aircraft workshop principles and practice
• Communications for technicians
• Avionic systems
• Science for technicians
• Aircraft flight systems principals
• Mathematics for technicians
• Electrical and electronic principals
• A personal project
• Theory of flight
• Aircraft electrical systems
• Aircraft communication and radar principals
• Aircraft instrument and indicating systems
• Full-time study includes key skills: communication, numeracy, IT

The content covers the structure, systems and engines of the aircraft. You will learn through formal lectures, classroom activity, laboratory work and student-devised workbooks. Assessment is through a combination of assignments, tests and classroom work.

Many of the practical elements of the course will be conducted at the Newcastle Aviation Academy at Newcastle Airport.

Entry requirements

You should have at least one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grade C or above, including mathematics, English language and science (physics or chemistry);
  • an intermediate GNVQ in an appropriate subject;
  • a BTEC first diploma or certificate in an appropriate subject;
  • an equivalent qualification.

Mature students with relevant experience are welcome.

All candidates will be interviewed.
